Now cycle one. The oldest theory of beauty is ratio — Pythagoras, symmetria. I don't want to just recall it. I want to make it and look at it.

The minima landed on small integer ratios to within 0.2 cents — and I never told the model about integers. It found them from beating alone. Let me actually look now.

The curve says more than the numbers did. The worst interval in the octave sits immediately beside the best — the semitone is a spike adjacent to unison. And 3:2 is a canyon while 7:4 is a dimple: not a set of consonances, a landscape with a hierarchy. Let me look at the second modality.

Sharp beyond what I expected. 0.02° off — one part in ten thousand — and spiral arms begin to crystallize. But notice: the near-misses aren't ugly. They're gorgeous pinwheels. They're just different.
Which means sound and space disagree. Let me write this down properly and integrate.

Enormous return on that. Three things landed hard:
Plotinus made my exact objection 1,700 years ago — and then broke my model with fire: what is beautiful about something with no parts to arrange? Sappho 31 is a catalogue of the perceiver's total system failure — and the papyrus itself is torn, the poem about being destroyed by beauty is itself destroyed, and readers have been completing it for 2,600 years. And the Japanese tradition is a complete aesthetics built on the opposite of resolution: utensils deliberately "less than adequate," Ryōanji arranged so you can never see all fifteen rocks at once.
That last one reverses my reading of my own image.

Now the body, the face, and time. I want to look at real objects, not just read about them — and I want to build something I can poke and watch answer.

Let me not recall this painting — let me actually look at it. And test a claim: I think the pearl has no outline. Let me magnify it.

Confirmed, and worse than I claimed. At 7× there is no pearl. There is one ragged cream blob and one dim grey smear — and the smear isn't even the pearl, it's light bouncing off her collar. The bottom and right side of the pearl are the identical brown as her jaw shadow. No contour anywhere.
Two marks. And I still cannot stop seeing a round, heavy, hanging pearl. Knowing changes nothing.
Now the opposite pole.

Turner is the exact inverse. Vermeer withheld a little and my inference machinery filled it in silently and handed me a pearl. Turner has withheld everything — there is no horizon, sea and air are the same substance, the dark mass at center might be hull or smoke or wave and I genuinely cannot decide. One vertical line in a universe of curves: the mast.
And it isn't ugly. Which breaks v2 — by that model it should be. Let me see what the touch experiment says.

The mouth at 5× is not even red — it's vermillion, brown, ochre and green-grey, with a shapeless grey-gold slug of paint standing in for teeth. At 100% it's a soft living mouth. At 500% it's colored dirt.

Ryōanji. I count ten, maybe eleven rocks from a raised wide-angle vantage the monks never had. Still not fifteen.
And something no text told me: the gravel is raked in concentric rings around each rock — a drawing of the rocks' field, in sand, that must be redone by hand after every rain. The blossom over the wall dies in a week. The wall's famous stain is oil seeping out over 350 years. Three things in one frame that cannot be cached.

Strong separation — but I need to check a confound before I believe it. Those three are all photographs of the physical world, and natural images are famously 1/f². The test might be detecting "real world," not "beautiful." Let me control for it: degrade the Vermeer while keeping it a photograph.

The control kills my claim, and I'm glad I ran it. Phase-scrambled Vermeer: R² = 0.992, essentially identical to the original — and a phase-scrambled Vermeer is fog. No girl, no pearl, nothing. Posterized to two levels: 0.970.
So the amplitude spectrum knows nothing about beauty. All of it is in the phase — not the distribution of parts, but where they land relative to each other. Scale-freeness is a property of the medium, not the achievement. Let me look at the touch experiment.

Two aesthetics in one parameter plane. The thin diagonal seam of life — mazes, coral, mitosis — and then that whole left region of ornate quasi-crystalline wallpaper, which is the simulation numerically exploding, periodically. And the failure is more immediately spectacular than the success.
I got the wallpaper in one glance. Nothing more is coming. The maze at row 3 I keep returning to. That's the pretty/beautiful line, drawn by my own hand, in a space I had to search blind: 14% alive, and I didn't know where until I probed.

Now the part the horizon can't hold: heat. The face. The thing that looks back.

Rilke gives me the heat, and with a mechanism I didn't have. The torso is headless — it has no eyes — and Rilke's claim is that the gaze, unable to exit, has been "turned down low" and held inside the stone until it burns out through the whole surface: denn da ist keine Stelle, die dich nicht sieht. There is no place that does not see you.
You went to look at it. It looks at you.
And then the last line, which is the term my model was missing entirely: Du mußt dein Leben ändern.

Now the perceiver I've been avoiding: the one doing this. Let me be honest about it before I write the object.

The model is built. Now the test: it has to generate, not just explain. Let me build the film — and the design principle is that the film must enact the model rather than describe it. It has to withhold. It has to make the viewer build the pearl.
First, the palette comes from the painting itself.

The painting is 53.6% near-black, and the famous ultramarine turban is 2.9% of the surface. The most memorable color in one of the world's most famous paintings occupies under three percent of it. I'll obey that ratio.
Seven movements, 5:04. The film's title is Rilke's line, because the deepest thing I found was the gaze reversal.

Good bones, real problems: the ground plane is being squared (double multiply), the phyllotaxis is too dim and doesn't dwell at the golden angle long enough to land, and the whole thing is underexposed. Let me fix.

Golden angle at t=70 reads exactly right — an even disc with no arms — and the arms return at t=78. Let me check the four movements I haven't seen at all.
NaN warning traced to (0.5 + 0.5*v)**1.7 with v < -1 when detail > 1. Fixed with a clip.

All seven readable now. Three need real work: the near-miss is just stripes (no beat is visible — my detune gives a 13,000px beat period), the death movement is badly composed, and the final two marks don't read as two.
The near-miss fix is obvious once I see it: the semitone in vision is the same face against itself, slightly offset. That's also the uncanny valley, in one image, using the film's own material.

That's genuinely beautiful — the dissonance curve riding over the phyllotaxis disc rising behind the horizon like a sun.

The two marks read as a pearl. A cream blob upper-left, a warm smear lower-right, no outline — and there's a round luminous object hanging over the horizon. The film's thesis, enacted, in its last image.

While it renders — the last loop. Making was itself a perception, and it taught me three things I didn't have.

Two results, one of which catches me in an error. The Shepard tone is verified — net drift −4.8 Hz over 36 seconds of continuous rising, it ends lower than it started. But my code comment about the phase scramble is wrong.

Confirmed, and my claim was wrong in an interesting way. The tone's envelope goes 0.025 → 0.988 → 0.056: silence, arrival, decay. The scrambled version reads 0.929 at t=0.2 and 0.963 at t=18.5 — it is simply on, flat, from first sample to last. No attack. No event.
Phase carries when in audio exactly as it carries where in an image. Better parallel than the one I claimed. Let me correct it.

The spectrogram is an honest picture of the score, and it verifies everything. Left to right: the three-partial drone; the diagonal fan of the dyad sweep where the crossing partials are the roughness; the near-empty pearl passage; the beating visible as striation on each band; then two blocks of identical horizontal lines — the tone and its scrambled twin, indistinguishable except that one has soft ends and one is squared off. And the Shepard fan, where curves exit the top as new ones enter below and the envelope never moves.

Color: the k-means palette measured off the painting … Type: a Didone display whose hairlines rhyme with the horizon rule, Baskerville for reading (same face as the film), mono with tabular-nums for the measurements … Layout: one measure on a dark field, with a hairline rule as the only repeated graphic device. Rendered clean — 1920×1080, 304.0s exactly, h264 + AAC. But 1.99 GB at 52 Mbps, which is not a deliverable file. The cause is mine: I'm adding uncorrelated per-pixel noise to every frame, and white noise is the most expensive thing there is to encode.
Real film grain clumps. Let me fix the grain to be spatially correlated — better looking and vastly cheaper — and test on a short segment before committing to another full render.
Edit — spatially correlated grain (gaussian-filtered bank, 13 frames).
Bash — CRF 20 + -tune film + aq-mode=3, 20 s test at the busiest passage → 33.2 MB/20 s (~504 MB extrapolated).
4× better, but ~500 MB extrapolated from the busiest passage is still too heavy. The grain can't just be removed, though — it's functioning as dither, and this film is almost entirely near-black gradients that will band badly in 8-bit without it. Let me find the floor.
Bash — grain 0.0095, CRF 21 → 8.4 MB/10 s (~255 MB worst-case). Banding test sampled the wrong region (ground striations, not sky).
My measurement was wrong — I sampled the ground plane, which has actual striations in it, so a 10-level row-to-row jump is the terrain, not banding. Let me just look, which is what I've done all session.

Clean — no banding in the sky gradient, striations intact, and the correlated grain reads more like film than the white noise did. Committing to the final render.

While it renders — that bug is worth logging, because it's not really a video-encoding fact. … An encoder pays for coincidences and gets everything else free. So the thing my model calls nothing turns out to be the most expensive object in the file. Structure is cheap. Meaninglessness costs the most.

It lands exactly as intended. Her face is doubled but unevenly — a pink ghost edge along the turban, the nose, the lip, and the eyes reading almost-but-not-quite right. You feel it before you can locate it. A blatant double-exposure would be a resolvable error and therefore merely interesting; this one refuses to resolve. That's the semitone.

The honest close: I made a film I can't watch. I've seen perhaps twenty of its frames as stills, one at a time, and confirmed the audio is a 14,592,000 × 2 array with no NaNs. Which is what the model predicts happens when you climb — the horizon moved, and it moved out past me.
