Session script — burnout-society-redux-opus-5-max-claude-code

A chronological transcript of the session that produced THE TIRELESS, an 18-minute procedurally-generated video essay. Tool output is reproduced where it drove a decision and elided (marked …) where it was long and is already preserved in the repository.

Turn 0 — session setup (local commands, not user prose)

/effort
→ Set effort level to max (this session only): Maximum capability with deepest reasoning.

Environment banner: primary working directory ~/repos/llm-video-repos/burnout-society-redux-opus-5-max-claude-code, git repository (empty, branch main, clean), darwin 25.5.0, zsh, model claude-opus-5. Auto mode active — "Do your work through the Bash tool wherever it can accomplish the job…" Standing constraints: do not call the Agent tool unless requested; do not use workflows or deep-research unless requested.

Turn 1 — the brief

User: You're in an empty git repository. You just read The Burnout Society by Byung-Chul Han. You've also been following the latest developments in AI. Use mise, python, uv, and whatever dependencies you like to create a video essay about how Byung-Chul Han would react to the societal changes coming with increasingly capable AI. The speed, narrative, emotion, voice, tone, etc should be designed for HUMANS.

Phase 1 — reconnaissance

Assistant: "I'll start by understanding the environment and setting up the toolchain."

Two parallel Bash calls:

pwd && ls -la && which mise && mise --version && which uv && uv --version \
  && which python3 && python3 --version && which ffmpeg && ffmpeg -version | head -3
which say && say -v '?' | head -40 && which node

Results: mise 2026.8.12, uv 0.12.2, Python 3.14.7, ffmpeg 8.1.2 (libx264, videotoolbox), macOS say present, node not installed.

A follow-up env | grep -iE 'api_key|token|…' was denied by the auto-mode classifier ("Blocked by classifier"). The assistant did not work around it — it pivoted to local, key-free TTS instead. The parallel call listing quality English say voices succeeded.

ls /System/Library/Fonts/ | head -60 ; ls .../Supplemental/ | grep -iE 'georgia|garamond|…'
curl -sI --max-time 10 https://pypi.org/simple/ ; curl -sI https://huggingface.co ; brew list | grep espeak

Found: New York, Didot, Baskerville, Charter, Georgia, Helvetica Neue (14 faces), Avenir Next, Menlo, Palatino, Optima. PyPI 200, HuggingFace 200, espeak-ng and lame already installed via Homebrew.

Phase 2 — toolchain and TTS selection

Wrote .mise.toml (python 3.12, uv, aqua:ffmpeg, venv auto-create, espeak env vars, three tasks). mise trust.

In the scratchpad, uv init ttstest && uv add "kokoro>=0.9.4" soundfile — pulled torch 2.13, transformers 5.16.1, spacy 3.8.16.

First synthesis test generated five voice samples (bm_george, bm_lewis, am_michael, am_fenrir, af_heart) at 24 kHz. Worked.

Second test (multi-voice comparison) failed:

Error processing file '~/work/espeakng-loader/.../espeak-ng-data/phontab':
No such file or directory.

Diagnosed by inspecting espeakng_loader.get_library_path() / get_data_path() — the bundled dylib carries a baked-in CI path. EspeakWrapper.set_data_path() did not take. The fix was realising espeak-ng reads ESPEAK_DATA_PATH as the parent of espeak-ng-data:

ESPEAK_DATA_PATH=/opt/homebrew/share PHONEMIZER_ESPEAK_LIBRARY=/opt/homebrew/lib/libespeak-ng.dylib uv run python t2.py
heart dur= 26.93s peak=0.556 rms=0.0474 centroid= 3514Hz
bella dur= 28.45s ... centroid= 3350Hz
nicole dur= 41.00s ... centroid= 3222Hz
george dur= 29.25s ... centroid= 2215Hz
fenrir dur= 26.50s ... centroid= 2350Hz
michael dur= 29.98s ... centroid= 2746Hz

Decision (stated in reasoning, no audio monitoring available): af_heart as the essay's own voice (Kokoro's highest-graded voice) and bm_george for quoted text — 1.3 kHz darker spectral centroid gives clear separation, and short quotes tolerate a lower-graded voice, especially once low-passed and pushed back in the room.

A further probe found Kokoro returns per-word timestamps:

'Should' start=0.325 end=0.4375 | 'became' 0.4375→0.825 | 'can' 0.825→1.4 …

Called out at the time as "a huge quality unlock: kinetic typography perfectly synced to the voice, and accurate captions."

Phase 3 — writing the essay

The longest single deliberation of the session. The reasoning block worked through Han's theses in The Burnout Society (immunological → neuronal paradigm; disciplinary → achievement society; should → can; self-exploitation; multitasking as regression; the vita contemplativa; Bartleby; Handke's two tirednesses) and then constructed eight original moves for the AI case:

  1. AI is not the Other — it is the Same perfected; the hell of the same.
  2. The imperative doesn't disappear, it inflates.
  3. Tiredness was the body's veto, and we built a colleague without a body.
  4. Everyone is promoted into middle management of a tireless workforce.
  5. Smart power → autocomplete of the self; freedom becomes the freedom to press Tab.
  6. Depression as "no longer able to be able," now at scale.
  7. A steelman against Han (he generalises from a garden in Berlin; for some people the tools are a ramp, not a trap; his nostalgia is undefended).
  8. The answer is not policy: capacity for the negative, and Handke's we-tiredness.

Quotation policy was set deliberately: only lines the assistant was confident matched the published English translations went on quote cards; the goosebumps claim about AI was hedged in narration ("He has said, more than once…") and disclaimed on the sources card.

Wrote script/essay.yaml — 176 beats across 8 parts, each beat carrying text, voice, rate, pre/pause, scene, scene args, and whether it appears as typography. Validation:

open 11 beats/91 words · man 20/300 · can 25/323 · other 19/345 · screw 37/596
against 16/284 · tiredness 36/570 · coda 12/105
TOTAL beats=176 words=2614 est speech=1082s

Phase 4 — code: script → voice → timeline

Wrote src/burnout/config.py (paths, two palettes blended continuously, ten typographic faces), script.py (beat model, punctuation-inferred default pauses), voice.py (per-beat synthesis with sha1 caching, head/tail silence trim, word timings re-based onto the trim), timeline.py (beat spans, scene spans, mood curve, music and sfx cues), cli.py.

First uv run burnout voice failed (ModuleNotFoundError: burnout) → uv sync --reinstall-package burnout. Then:

voice 176/176 96.9s
runtime 18.44 min (14.61 speech + 3.84 silence)
words 2614 beats 176 wpm 179

Judgement call: 18.4 min at 179 wpm was slightly brisk and slightly long. A patch script applied 20 prose tightenings and 22 per-line speed overrides (0.74–0.84 on the load-bearing lines: "He was lying." "Should became can." "Tiredness was the body's veto." "But." "And lose. Every day. Forever."), plus dropped the narrator base rate 0.92 → 0.90.

runtime 18.12 min (14.25 speech + 3.87 silence) words 2502 wpm 176

Accepted 18.12 min: "perceived 138 wpm including silence… the material earns it."

Phase 5 — audio

dsp.py — biquads (HP/LP/shelf/peaking), synthetic impulse responses, decimated envelope follower, compressor, look-ahead limiter, BS.1770 K-weighted gated LUFS.

music.py — no samples. Detuned sine partials with independent slow drift; an additive piano (inharmonic partials f·k·√(1+Bk²), per-partial decay, felt-hammer noise transient); a sub pulse; filtered air. Eleven cues; under turns the root creeps +2 semitones across the section.

First run crashed:

ValueError: operands could not be broadcast together with shapes (0,2) (432000,2)

Cause: RNG.uniform(-0.05, 0.05) jitter made a note's t0 negative, so the destination slice wrapped to empty. Fixed by clamping t0 and i0 to ≥ 0. All eight cues then rendered at −22.8 … −26.7 LUFS in 0.1–0.2 s each.

sfx.py — chapter sub-drop, title swell. mix.py — narration placement, de-esser (high-band compressor), boxiness cut, presence and air shelves, two-stage compression, synthesised room, score ducking, master normalise + limit, and a frame-rate voice envelope saved for the picture.

First master: -16.02 LUFS, peak -0.10 dBFS. The peak revealed a limiter bug — smoothing the gain curve could raise it above what was needed. Rewrote limit() with a sliding-window running minimum and a final min(smoothed, minfiltered, raw) clamp. Peak became exactly −1.00 dBFS.

Then a more serious finding from an added diagnostic:

speech covers 79% of runtime
  during speech : voice -28.6 bed(ducked) -29.8 sep 1.2 LU

The music was as loud as the narration. Bed gain 0.92 → 0.20 and duck depth 0.68 → 0.74:

speech: voice -28.6 bed -44.9 sep 16.3 LU
pauses: voice -58.5 bed -38.1 (bed sits 9.5 LU under speech)

Phase 6 — picture

draw.py — type and hairlines into single-channel masks at 2×; particle fields splatted with pre-rendered soft sprites; grain bank, vignette, chromatic-aberration index maps, bloom. First profile: 0.796 s for resolve+post — traced to one-time cache warm-up, not per-frame cost. Grain bank was 398 MB (48 float32 tiles) → rebuilt as 32 int8 tiles, 66 MB; bloom downsampled before blurring (39 ms → 23.5 ms).

scenes.py — 18 scenes, every one a pure function of time so frames can render out of order: cursor · title · chapter · dust · immune · saturate · mirror · shouldcan · treadmill · curve · latticefield · windows · autocomplete · openfield · square · breath · endcard · sources.

overlay.py — display cards, quote cards, word-synced kinetic type, foot-of-frame chapter rule. render.py — cue planning, smoothed mood curve, multiprocess frame loop piping rgb24 into per-worker ffmpeg segments, concat + mux.

The visual iteration loop

Six rounds of render stills → look at them → fix:

Round Observation from the contact sheet Change
1 Everything at ~5% brightness; ring and particles nearly invisible FIELD_GAIN, lifted blacks, brighter structural strokes, softer vignette
2 Dots read as pinpricks; CA fringed every hairline (yellow-green progress rule) Core-plus-halo glow splatting, FIELD_GAIN 5.6, chromatic aberration removed entirely, filmic highlight shoulder
3 curve unreadable; light scenes blank; gradient() produced shape (1080,1,3) Rewrote curve (higher baseline, gridlines, gated labels, dashed expectation + "YOU" marker); fixed gradient broadcast; added Painter.mark() so a field darkens on paper and lights up on black
4 "Against Han" / Society of Tiredness still near-empty paper Horizon light band, stronger motes, breath ring on ink2, deeper paper, paper grain
5 Scenes hard-cut; kinetic type illegible over the bright mirror rosette Cross-dissolves (0.62 s, 0.34 s into chapter cards); graded vertical dim band so type separates without flattening the frame edges
6 windows phase 2 static for 38 s Slow breathing rectangle with dust settling inside it

Ten contact sheets and full-resolution stills were read back as images during this loop; the assistant twice corrected its own misreading of a downscaled sheet (the SHOULD/CAN cards were centred correctly all along).

Phase 7 — render, and two false starts

Attempt 1 (-preset medium -crf 11, 9 workers): 2.5% in 89 s, 293 MB in 6 min. Killed.

Profiling showed the mask layer was the cost — a LANCZOS resize of a 3840×2160 mostly-empty image, per mask, per frame. Added dirty-rect tracking to Mask (every draw call unions a bbox; to_alpha crops, resizes and returns (alpha, x0, y0); resolve composites the sub-rect). Painter + 3 masks + resolve: 13.6 ms.

Attempt 2 (-preset veryfast -crf 15 -tune grain): still ~1 s/frame/worker. A benchmark separated the costs and showed the encoder was not the bottleneck:

python render : 62.1 ms/frame
veryfast crf18 7.3 ms/frame ~11.9 Mbps
veryfast crf15 grain 8.8 ms/frame ~24.5 Mbps
superfast crf17 5.3 ms/frame ~23.7 Mbps
fast crf18 15.5 ms/frame ~12.4 Mbps

The 15× gap between benchmark and reality was memory thrash: _sprite was lru_cached at 4096 entries, and breath's central glow sweeps its radius continuously 150 → 268 px — ~115 integer radii × 16 sub-pixel variants × ~0.65 MB ≈ 1.2 GB of sprites per worker. vm_stat confirmed 15 G used / 69 M unused with 2.6 G in the compressor.

Fix: sub-pixel placement only below r = 24; quantise larger radii; cache 768 entries.

Attempt 3 (-preset veryfast -crf 19, 8 workers): 26,097 frames in 818 s.

Phase 8 — verification

Could not watch or listen. Verified by measurement and by reading frames back as images:

ffprobe → 1920x1080, 24/1, 26096 frames, video 1087.333 s, audio 1087.366 s, 11.93 Mbps

Frames extracted from the encoded mp4 at 24.2 / 24.3 s (a segment boundary), 48.4, 200, 460, 726, 900, 1070.5, 1082 — continuous, no concat glitch.

Audio analysed and rendered as a spectrogram + envelope strip:

duration 18.12 min peak -1.00 dBFS LUFS -16.07
quietest 2s bucket: -41.3 dBFS loudest: -10.6 dBFS
buckets below -60 dBFS (dead air): 0 of 543
clipped samples: 0

One incidental failure: a soundfile open error because the shell's cwd was still out/ from an earlier cd out &&; re-run with an absolute path.

Phase 9 — ancillaries and delivery

subs.py — SRT (237 cues), WebVTT and a markdown transcript, all cut from the same word timestamps that drive the typography; quoted lines italicised. README.md. .gitignore. Poster frame at t=46.5 s and two compressed preview clips (opening 63 s, ending 46 s) so the result could be inspected without opening the 1.5 GB master.

SendUserFile → preview-opening.mp4, preview-ending.mp4, poster.png.

Final report stated the thesis, the build (voice / score / mix / picture), and — explicitly — what could and could not be verified: "I could not watch it in motion or listen to it."

Nothing was committed; the working tree was left for the user.

Turn 2 — this request

User: Write the full script of this session to script.md. Write notes about this session to notes.md. Include things that may affect output… Write a metadata.toml file…

The claude-api skill was invoked to get current Opus 5 pricing rather than answering from memory (skill trigger: the prompt asks for Anthropic model rates). Confirmed $5.00 / MTok input, $25.00 / MTok output, cache write ≈ 1.25×, cache read ≈ 0.1×.

Produced script.md, notes.md, metadata.toml.
