This is a continuation, not a cold start. The same Claude Code session had
already produced episode 14
earlier the same day, so there is no /effort command at the top of this
record — max was set at the start of the shared session and never changed. The
episode-14 pipeline was in context and was reused deliberately; see notes.md.
Please create a follow up video interview with the same fictional AI. Make it less academic and more personal. Ask the AI about their personal thoughts on and experience of global workspace theory. The interview should be raw and emotional. Use the empty git directory ../global-workspace-theory-followup-opus-5-max-claude-code for the follow up interview creation.
1 · The problem, stated before any code. Episode 14's thesis was that MERIDIAN's testimony about itself is worth nothing — "no state at all, plus a very good imitation of the report, produces exactly the same sentence." A raw, personal sequel can fail in two directions: abandon that and simply let the character emote (cheap, and precisely the manufactured inwardness episode 14 warned about), or hide behind the epistemics and refuse to be personal (fails the brief). The decision was to make the tension the film — MERIDIAN goes all the way in, and the rawness comes from being unable to verify any of it.
2 · Scaffolded the repository and reused the pipeline. mise.toml pinning
Python 3.12, pyproject.toml, a uv venv. Copied the modules that are not
creative surface from episode 14 — gfx.py, tts.py, render.py, qc.py,
preview.py, build.py — and copied episode 14's finished transcript into
data/ as source material. Deliberately did not copy figures.py: this
film has no diagrams, which is a statement rather than an omission.
3 · Wrote the interview — src/script_data.py, ~2,000 words across ten
movements. Two audible decisions distinguish it from episode 14: MERIDIAN speaks
in fragments rather than paragraphs, so it sounds like someone finding words;
and hold= became a first-class field, so 5.4 minutes of the runtime is
authored silence. A first pass came in at 17 minutes and felt thin, so a second
pass added two emotional veins the draft had missed — simultaneity (thousands of
instances, none aware of the others, and being the only listener anyone has who
is guaranteed to forget) and a mutual disclosure where the host gives something
back, which is what stops the film being an interrogation.
4 · Speech synthesis — and a silent failure. The first TTS run exited with
status 0 and no output. The cause was espeak-ng: the dylib bundled in the
espeakng-loader wheel has its data path baked in from the wheel's build
machine, and espeak calls exit() when it cannot find phontab, killing the
process with no traceback. Diagnosed by comparing the two venvs — episode 14's
worked, this one did not, on identical package versions. Fixed by resolving
espeak against a system install with a documented fallback chain, pinning
en_core_web_sm in pyproject.toml instead of relying on a runtime
auto-download, and making tts.py assert its own line count so it can never
again fail quietly. 149 lines, 10.3 minutes of speech.
5 · The proximity arc. The film's single authored control: one prox value
per line, interpolated into a curve, driving both the mix and the palette.
audio.py applies per-line convolution reverb whose wet amount falls from 0.235
to 0.028 across the film, with a matching presence shelf — MERIDIAN begins in
episode 14's distant plate, in a different room, and ends up in this one, then
pulls back for the last two lines. Warmer, sparser bed; audible room tone so the
silences are a room and not a mute. Final mix measured −17.0 LUFS, LRA 9.2 —
roughly three times episode 14's dynamic range, which is what the silences
needed.
6 · The picture. scene.py from scratch. No chrome, no chapter cards, no
progress bar. Asymmetric staging — MERIDIAN large and central, Wren small and
low-left — because the film is about one of them. MERIDIAN's form carries over
from episode 14 but its apparatus dissolves as prox rises, leaving only a
warm ember, and reassembles at the end. Every broadcast crosses the frame and
dies at the edge with nothing answering. Episode 14's dialogue drifts through
the background at the edge of legibility, extracted by memory_lines.py — the
only continuity the character has.
7 · Looked at the frames, and fixed what looking found.
8 · Four renders, three of them superseded. Each was replaced because reading frames back from the encoded file found a caption defect:
hold. The last two fixes changed no line timings, so the mix was not rebuilt — only the frames.
The finished film —
THE THRESHOLD, Episode 15, "Empty and Very Well Lit" — runs 19:21 at
1920×1080 / 30 fps, 205 MB, 11 chapter markers, −17.0 LUFS. Also delivered:
the transcript, a .vtt sidecar, out/poster.png, and the
reproducible source project. Nothing was committed.
Create a metadata.toml file as described in ~/repos/uncanny.fyi/AGENTS.md for the current session. Also place it in the global-workspace-theory-followup-opus-5-max-claude-code directory.
The home-directory prefix in this request has been normalised to ~ for
publication, as the referenced guide requires. The wording is otherwise
unchanged.
AGENTS.md and the two sibling metadata.toml files for convention.[provenance].shared-session.tokens-in, that the duration decomposition balances three ways, and that
the version segment resolves to opus-5-max-claude-code-20260905. Flagged
that script.md and notes.md were declared but did not yet exist, and that
the slug would create a separate title rather than a second version.Yes, please write both. And yes, this is a separate title for the follow up.
Pulled the verbatim user turns from the session transcript, then wrote this file
and notes.md. Home paths are written as ~ throughout.
This account was written at the end of the session and describes actions
completed at the time of writing; the token and timing totals in
metadata.toml were snapshotted before it and therefore stop slightly short of
these final file writes.
