Research the work of Cameron Berg, Joscha Bach, and Karl Friston. Berg and Bach both research machine consciousness. Friston has developed a unifying principle for all beings called the Free Energy Principle. Deeply research these individuals and their work in these fields.
Create a film about these thinkers and their ideas. Make the film entertaining, artistic, and surreal, sort of like a Radiolab show combined with the psychological realism of a Darren Aronofsky film.
Use mise, uv, and python to create the film. Use any dependencies you like as long as they're version controlled and builds are reproducible.
Environment (17:33). Checked the repo (empty, one branch, no commits) and the toolchain: mise 2026.9.1, uv 0.12.2, Python 3.12/3.13 via mise, FFmpeg available through mise, Apple M5 with 10 cores and 16 GB.
Research (17:34–17:44). Ran web searches and page fetches on all three thinkers: Berg's arXiv paper 2510.24797 and its HTML version (exact self-referential prompt, per-model percentages, the Llama 3.3 70B deception-feature steering numbers, example model outputs, caveats), AE Studio's research page, two Cognitive Revolution episodes (Nov 2025, Apr 2026), the AM I? documentary pages; Bach's Wikipedia entry, the CIMC "Machine Consciousness Hypothesis" PDF (text extracted with pypdf), Lex Fridman transcripts (#101, #392), the Jim Rutt episode; Friston's Wikipedia entry, the 2009 "rough guide" paper (PDF extracted), "Life as we know it", "Am I Self-Conscious?", the Montréal Review interview (June 2026), Psychology Today (July 2025), Slate Star Codex. The Wired profile could not be fetched from this machine; the woodlouse anecdote was taken from secondary sources. Wrote research/karl-friston.md, research/joscha-bach.md, research/cameron-berg.md, research/synthesis.md, marking verbatim quotations.
Scaffolding (17:42–17:52). Wrote mise.toml (Python 3.12.13, uv 0.12.2, tasks), pyproject.toml, .gitignore; vendored IBM Plex Serif and Mono (OFL). First uv lock resolved an ancient transformers (4.12) that needed a Rust build of tokenizers; fixed by constraining transformers/tokenizers/torch. Enabled hatch direct references and pinned the spaCy model that misaki would otherwise pip-install at runtime.
Narration (17:50–17:56). Pinned Kokoro-82M to a revision and SHA-256 (fetch.py), tested six voices and inline phoneme overrides for names (Friston, Joscha Bach, woodlice, MicroPsi), then wrote the screenplay as data (script.py: 23 scenes, 124 lines, six voices, every thinker line a captioned verbatim quotation), the cached TTS module and the timeline module. Synthesized all 124 lines in the background; the timeline came to 18.8 minutes.
Score (17:58–18:03). Wrote a numpy synthesizer (audio/synth.py: additive saws, pads, Karplus-Strong, strings, heartbeat, Shepard-Risset glissando, convolution reverb, limiter) and the cue-by-cue score (audio/score.py) plus shared simulations (sims.py: Kuramoto, typing times). A control-signal smoother was O(n·σ) and took 43 s per cue; replaced with a decimated version. Added per-stem loudness normalization and side-chain ducking. Full compose ran in 46 s.
Visuals (18:03–18:40). Wrote visuals/base.py (noise, text, looks, captions), eye.py (procedural eye), room.py (perspective floor, pendulum bulb, chair shadow, dust), nature.py (woodlice garden, free-energy equation, particle soup with Markov blanket, wireframe valley, Kuramoto field, SmoothLife), programs.py (cold open, titles, credits, terminal, data typography, video feedback), render.py and cli.py. Reviewed stills scene by scene and fixed: room geometry (chair too close, light pool off-frame), woodlice drawn at full resolution, missing Greek glyphs in the font, SmoothLife over-density and growth rate, oscillator glow washing out at full sync, a feedback loop that accumulated to white, an oversized figure in the valley, a missing superscript glyph. Wrote the test suite (31 cases) and README.
Preview and fixes (18:41–18:47). Rendered a 640×360 preview of the whole film in 58 s on 9 workers. Found the output truncated to the last subtitle because of -shortest; removed it. Removed per-scene frame-count rounding drift. Checked narration placement against cue windows on a waveform plot. Gave the equation scene a heading so it no longer opened on black.
Full render (18:47–19:11). 27,011 frames at 1080p24 in 1,476 s wall on 9 workers. Meanwhile: committed the project, lifted the Subject's whisper by 2 dB and deepened ducking, pre-composed the master soundtrack, removed a duplicated FFmpeg flag, corrected the README render-time estimate.
Delivery (19:12–19:22). The stream-copied master came out at 3.2 GB (film grain at CRF 17), so added a delivery encode step (CRF 22, 1.5 GB) to the pipeline and ran it (559 s). Probed streams and durations, extracted and inspected 14 full-resolution frames, committed.
Four commits: 706ada3 (the film), e6a65f2 (mix), 8bab90d (render flag), ce6d8b4 (delivery encode).
Local time: ~19:22
The film is built, verified, and committed.
The film: dist/the_dark_room.mp4 is THE DARK ROOM, a 1080p, 24 fps film with stereo sound and an embedded English subtitle track; the stream-copied master sits beside it, along with a standalone .srt. Delivery 1.5 GB, master 3.2 GB, runtime 18:45.
What it is. Two fictional Radiolab-style hosts walk through four acts: Friston's woodlouse epiphany and the Free Energy Principle, Bach's claim that only a simulation can be conscious, Berg's self-referential prompt experiment with its deception-feature twist, and a synthesis that collapses into a recursive loop before a quiet coda back in the garden. The spine is one image, the dark room: Friston's skull and his dark-room problem, Bach's dream the brain renders, and Berg's context window. The Aronofsky side comes from a procedural eye whose pupil contains an infinite regress of itself, a heartbeat that accelerates, a Shepard-Risset glissando that never resolves, Pi-style "restate the assumptions" title cards, and high-contrast grain.
Research. Notes with sources for all three thinkers and a synthesis are in research/. The screenplay only puts words in Friston's, Bach's, or Berg's mouths when they are verbatim quotations, each captioned on screen with its source. The Subject speaks only sentences that models actually produced in the 2025 paper. The credits state that the three did not take part and that the voices are synthetic.
How it is made. Everything is computed, nothing photographed or recorded: mise pins the toolchain; uv.lock pins every package including the FFmpeg binary and the spaCy model; narration is Kokoro-82M pinned by revision and hash; the score is a numpy synthesizer; the visuals are simulations and procedural renderers; every random number derives from one seed; 31 tests pass. Build: mise install, mise run install, mise run fetch, mise run film.
One caveat. I cannot listen to audio, so the mix was validated structurally rather than by ear: per-scene levels, narration placement against the timeline, ducking depth, and peak limiting. Voice casting used Kokoro's community quality grades. The knobs are the VOICES table in src/darkroom/script.py and the LEVELS table in src/darkroom/audio/score.py.

Create a metadata.toml file as described in ~/repos/uncanny.fyi/AGENTS.md for the current session. Be sure to create the references files as well, such as script.md containing a session script and notes.md with session notes.
Read the uncanny.fyi AGENTS.md and an existing artifact's metadata.toml, script.md and notes.md for format. Collected timestamps from git and file mtimes, the film's sizes, SHA-256 hashes, frame count and loudness (ffmpeg ebur128), and confirmed Claude Fable 5.1 token prices on the published pricing page. Wrote metadata.toml, script.md and notes.md in the project root and committed them.
